Recognition & Testimonials
“It is sometimes difficult to reconcile the client’s ideas and the decorator’s vision for a home. However, our experience with Mandil’s thoughtful and collaborative team could not have been more satisfying. Sean, Eric and their colleagues brought new life to our historic home–masterfully mixing modern and traditional elements in a way that exceeded our expectations. Mandil brings years of experience to their work and we couldn’t have been more pleased with the home they helped us create for our family.”

“Stephen Hentschel is a master of the details—he understands the dozen things you need to make the exterior look authentic, and then on the inside as well. He is a gifted architect and a highly talented artist, as well as someone who has incredible integrity and is honest as the day is long. While his designs are well grounded in architecture, they have extraordinary heart and a flair because he a truly gifted artist. He can literally bring a home to life on a napkin you could frame.”
Mary Kay and Larry Mueller
Denver, Colorado
“We tried working with a number of other architects before but were always frustrated because they merely parroted our ideas and didn’t add any value. After years of frustration we were finally referred to Stephen Hentschel by a neighbor. Our experience with him was completely different. After our first meeting, he came back with some amazing concepts that went way beyond anything we’d ever seen before. He had a clear vision for us and effortlessly translated what we wanted into some super-creative ideas overnight. All we could say is ‘wow’!”

Stephen Hentschel
Project Designer
Stephen Hentschel brings an artful eye to the design process at Hentschel Mandil Architecture. This partnership has brought a unique perspective to design projects, and clients benefit from the depth of experience and artful attention to detail the firm collectively possesses. Before partnering with Mandil Inc., Stephen founded Hentschel Designs in 1995 and since then, has been creating homes that give life to rich experiences. His clients rely on his 30-plus years of architecture and interior design experience, as well as his profound ability to listen to their needs and bring their visions to life.
Growing up in France and England with a penchant for art and design, Stephen honed his innate understanding of proportion and scale by studying the historic architecture of his surroundings. After several years living on the east coast of Florida, he went on to receive his Bachelor of Design in Architecture from the University of Florida and a Master of Architecture from the University of Colorado. In 2019, Stephen was inducted into the Colorado Homes & Lifestyles Circle of Excellence.
Sean Hughes
Senior Interior Designer
Senior interior designer Sean Hughes brings an impressive arts background to Mandil Inc.’s professional mix. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Colorado, Sean’s love of art and aesthetics was honed within the respected museums and galleries of New York City and Denver. His collaborations with leading institutions like the Denver Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art–Denver, the Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in Chelsea, New York and Denver’s Rule Gallery have also helped refine his singular approach to design.
Over the last decade, Sean has overseen more than 150 projects for a diversity of Mandil Inc. clients with a high percentage referred by other patrons. His design work—ranging from rustic bungalow remodels to the construction of a 12,000 square foot home in the Rocky Mountain foothills—consistently elevates each individual space, whether contemporary, traditional or transitional in style.
Sean’s projects also demonstrate an intimate understanding of the specialized needs of commercial clients, and developers who build for discerning patrons. Through a careful balance of the pragmatic and the visionary, he creates designs that deliver results. Down to the minutest details, Sean believes in creating the ‘complete package’.
For example, Sean was also a key part of the team that designed the highly successful Landmark and Meridian high-rise developments located south of downtown Denver during the five years the 14- and 16-story towers were under construction. His input on the overall branding concept and selection of finishes, furniture, lighting, millwork and accessories on three sales models and design offices helped achieve one of the highest rates of pre-construction sales experienced in Colorado.
But, it’s Sean’s ‘bedside manner’ that may be the most appreciated by his clients. Highly collaborative and loyal by nature, he gently encourages clients to actively engage in the design process as he reveals the essence of their lifestyle and needs. His sincere desire to exceed expectations through creating highly individualized interiors is guided by a strong focus on customer service. Whether chic or cozy, Sean creates spaces that go above and beyond the conventional.
As a collector of contemporary art and mid-century modern furniture, Sean shares, “Art is one of my loves. It’s what I’m passionate about. Great art and design provide an interior or community with an identity or point of reference for a client’s ideals. The interiors we develop here set a background for the foreground, ultimately creating a rich framework for our clients’ day-to-day lives.”
Kayla McDougle
Assistant Interior Designer
Kayla McDougle is an interior designer with a passion for creating spaces that not only look beautiful but feel deeply personal, intentional, and livable. She has worked extensively in residential and multi-family design, with experience ranging from cozy, detail-rich homes to large-scale new construction projects built from the ground up. What excites her most is the intersection of creativity and functionality—finding innovative ways to use space, honor the client’s vision, and deliver designs that elevate the way people live.
Originally from North Carolina, she studied interior design at Appalachian State University and has been working in the field ever since – starting in college and gaining hands-on experience early in her career. One of the most formative parts of that journey was her time with Habitat for Humanity, where Kayla served as president of the campus chapter for three years. Working closely with the organization – fundraising, organizing, and physically helping build homes – deepened her love for design and opened her eyes to the powerful role our environments play in shaping people’s lives. That experience taught her that design is not just about aesthetics – it’s about dignity, comfort, and possibility.
Since then, she has had the opportunity to work across multiple states, including Colorado, North Carolina, and California. Each location has added depth to her design perspective and broadened her understanding of how environment, lifestyle, and culture can (and should) influence design decisions.
Kayla joined Mandil Inc in January 2022, bringing with her a collaborative spirit, a keen eye for detail, and a deep appreciation for the impact design has on our daily lives. She approaches each project with a curious mind and a drive to think beyond the obvious – valuing the design process and problem-solving in a way that makes each space feel like it couldn’t belong to anyone else. Always looking for ways to think outside the box, she is inspired by travel, architecture, people, and even the occasional quirky thrift-store find. When she’s not knee-deep in floor plans or finishes, you’ll probably find her exploring neighborhoods for inspiration – because great design can be found just about anywhere.
